Best Lipsticks for tan/darker complexion

Hello there!

In today’s post, I would like to share some of my favorite lipsticks for tan/darker complexion. I have tried out a lot of colors and various brands of lipstick including drugstore and somewhat high end. Nothing seemed right, although some of them worked fine there wasn’t any thing that I could call the best and repurchase. I am sure some of you may have been there or may be overwhelmed by all the options out there.

I wasn’t someone who loved make up as a teenager. It was then when I quit my job and chose to be a homemaker that I spent some time in getting to know the art of make up. Initially, I didn’t want to invest in high end brands so I started trying out various shades from Maybelline, Revlon, Loreal, etc well, mainly drug store brands. It’s hard choosing a lipstick at a drugstore when you are not sure what color/shade suits you. They were awesome to look at or looked great on others/models but when you apply it on your lips, it just doesn’t feel right. Most of the times there aren’t any testers kept out for trying on. Some colors that I purchased were good but after a few months of use the quality of it just didn’t seem right. It may work for many of them but I just didn’t feel good when I wore them. That’s when I stepped into Sephora and tried out a few. Again, overwhelmed by the choices available I wasn’t sure which one to get. After trying out a quite a few lipsticks/ sets I am now happy with what I have.

I have a med-dark complexion and these lipsticks suit me very well.I have tried these on my mom and sister who are a few shades lighter/darker to me and they looked great as on them well.I definitely don’t like to spend a ton on lipsticks but personally I feel some of the high end brands definitely work better. The shelf life of lipsticks is 1-2 years and depending on the appearance you will be able to decide if it’s time to get rid of it before that. For me, the lipsticks lasts up to two years (if anything left beyond two years I will throw it away).

I have listed some of my favorite lipsticks in reds, pink and nudes . If you would like to spend a little more on your lipsticks here are a few options for you.

1.Marc Jacobs Goddess 202-Deep maraschino

Deep reds are one of the first lipstick color I have ever used. Red lipsticks instantly brightens up the look. This one from Marc Jacobs is the perfect red lipstick for both fair and darker skin tones without, making you look too flashy. It definitely is creamy and moisturizing. It’s the perfect lipstick for those Christmas pictures or for that date night look with a little black dress. I would also like to see this would be perfect for Indian weddings. It’s very pigmented and stays on your lips for quite a long time. You can find it at Sephora here.

2.YSL-Rose Perfecto 207

I guess a pink lipstick is a must have for anyone who is into make up but finding that perfect color could be challenging. I was browsing through the Sephora aisles when these YSL lipsticks in their elegant golden packaging caught my eye. I really wanted a pretty peach color but everything that looks good when looking at the lipstick tube doesn’t always look good on darker skin tones. So, I kept looking and tried this color and it was lovely. It’s not a bright pink but is slightly mauve and is on the matte side that is, it does not have any shine. This could be the perfect everyday lipstick best for work and casual too.The only thing I don’t like about this lipstick is the reapplication can be a little challenging since it is matte. Can be purchased here.

3. Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick- Chai

Bite beauty is one of my favorites lately. I love their lipstick formula, the scent and the fact that it is super moisturizing. Most of all the fact that their lipsticks are clean and edible (at least, that’s what they claim). I have looked into their ingredient list while most of them were clean but some didn’t look right. I didn’t bother going into further investigation. The BITE beauty-Chai is a mauve brown but for me it is more of nude mauve. So if you are looking for a pink nude lipstick then this could be the best fit. Best for everyday wear or for one those looks where you would like a neutral lips with some color. BITE Beauty lipsticks are creamy and are glide on easily. You can find it at Sephora here.

4.Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick- Tannin

This is another lipstick from BITE Beauty that I love. If you ask me to pick just one lipstick out of all, this would be it. It’s perfect for tan/darker skin tone. I wore this mostly in fall but I would say it is an all year round lipstick. It’s a poppy red and like I said earlier BITE beauty lipsticks are so creamy and moisturizing. The color brightens up my face and gives you that fresh and brighter look. Again, perfect for almost any occasion. It also has a good staying power. More info about BITE beauty here or purchase it here.

5.Kat Von D-Lolita

The perfect nude out there for darker skin tones. I didn’t like nude lipsticks a few years ago because nothing that I tried looked flattering but it all changed when I found Kat Von D -Lolita. I purchased a mini lipsticks set and this was one of the colors. Initially, I wasn’t sure about it but when I tried it on it looked amazing. I was a new mom back then and it was great to have a nude lipstick for those newborn pics where you want to look as natural as possible. If you are looking for a nude lipstick then look no further this is one of the best shades out there.More info here.

While we all know lipsticks are a girl’s best friend but not the safest thing to use with regards to the health. I am trying out and  looking for more natural options or made with safe food grade ingredients. Like I mentioned above, BITE beauty is one brand that claims that their lipsticks are edible. 100percentpure is another brand that makes natural lipsticks with the purest form of ingredients and I have tried their fruit pigment Lip glaze in color-watermelon a couple of years ago (I guess they no longer make that color) and the color was absolutely beautiful for summer and of course on tan skin. I think it’s time to go back and find something new over at 100percentpure. I am currently trying out the Origins hydrating lip color with floral extracts(here).

Please leave a comment below and let me know what’s your favorite color/shade of lipstick.
